The Machame route is one of the most beautiful and most popular trekking tours on Kilimanjaro. It is suitable for more exploratory hikers who wish for an added physically demanding climb than other routes. It presents stunning views of Mount Meru, Shira Ridge, and Kibo summit as you make your move through lush rainforest, moorland, and alpine desert.

Day 1 Airport Pick-Up - Drop Off At Hotel

You will be picked up by the staff of Jerry Tanzania Tours from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and driven to your hotel in Moshi. In the evening your guides will meet you at the hotel to brief you on your upcoming trek and do an equipment check to make sure you have all the necessary mountain gear. Gear which is missing can be rented on this day.

Journey time and Distance: 1 hour, 40 km from Kilimanjaro International Airport to Moshi.

Day 2 From Machame Gate To Machame Camp

After breakfast, you will be picked up from your hotel in Moshi and driven to the Machame Gate, about an hour’s drive away. While your guide is busy with the Registration forms, you can watch the mountain team prepare for the climb and once this is all done, your Kilimanjaro adventure will begin. In no time you will be deep within the magnificent mountain rainforest with ancient trees, primeval ferns, liana, lichen, and moss that carpets the ground and drapes from the trees. You will hear and with a little luck, even spot the beautiful black and white colobus monkeys in the treetops. After 5 to 6 hours, you will reach today’s destination – the Machame Camp which is situated just above the tree line at 2,835 meters. Here, at the base of Mt Kilimanjaro, you will have your first dinner followed by an overnight stay in tents.

Day 3 From Machame Camp To Shira Camp

Today’s early start is not due to a long stretch, but rather to allow you to reach Shira Camp at around mid-afternoon. As you walk you will notice the dramatic change in the landscape – from lush and green rainforest to dry moor and heathland. Arriving at your campsite a beautiful view of the mountain range opens up before you. The glaciers of Kibo glistens in the golden hue of the setting sun as you enjoy another lovingly cooked meal before climbing into your tent.

Day 4 From Shira Camp To Barranco Camp Via Lava Tower

Today you will climb 750 meters but you will be camping at an elevation only slightly higher than the previous night. This will allow your body to acclimatize better. The trek begins with a long ascent above the Shira Plateau in the direction of the Lava Tower (4,600 meters). The vegetation becomes sparser as the landscape changes to an afro-alpine desert. The route passes through the sweeping Barranco Valley with its lobelia and giant Senecio plants. After 6 to 7 hours, you will arrive at the most beautiful camp on the mountain – the Barranco Camp.

Day 5 From Barranco Camp To Barafu Camp

Today you will climb the “Barranco Wall”, where a steady hold will be needed. Luckily a helping hand is never far behind and your guides will assist you wherever necessary. You will make your way across the ridge, whilst enjoying wonderful views of the Kibo’s south glacier. In the Karanga Valley, you will stop for lunch, before embarking on another 2 to 3 hours climb to Barafu Camp (4,673 meters). At the camp, you will enjoy a well-deserved break, evening meal, and an early night.

Day 6 From Barafu Camp To Summit At Uhuru Peak, Descent To Mweka Camp

At around midnight, you will be awoken with a hot tea and light snack before you start your climb to Uhuru Peak. Ascending in the dark, with only a headlight to shine the way, you will climb the screes of Kibo, reaching Stella Point in about 5 to 7 hours. Walking along the crater ridge you will finally reach Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters) high above the clouds. On the “Roof of Africa” you will enjoy a 360 degrees view over the surrounding landscape before starting your descent along the same route. Just before midday, you will arrive at Barafu Camp, where you will have a warm meal and relax before continuing another 1 to 2 hours to Mweka Camp (3,100 meters). Here you will have your evening meal and sleep with the sights of Mount Kilimanjaro still fresh in your mind.

- Highest Point: 5,895 (Uhuru Peak)
- Walking time: 13-16 hours (6-8 hours ascent / 7-8 hours descent)
- Distance: 20 kilometres ( 7 kilometres ascent/ 13 kilometres descent)
- Environment: Alpine desert/ Stone scree/ ice-capped peak/ Montane forest

Day 7 Descent From Mweka Camp To Mweka Gate – Moshi

The final leg of your amazing adventure begins after breakfast with a traditional farewell ceremony from the mountain crew. Then a gentle 3 to 4 hours’ descent through the rainforest continues to Mweka Gate, where your driver will be waiting for you. He will take you back to the hotel in Moshi and after a warm shower, the rest of the day is free to rest, relax at the pool or celebrate your achievement.

Day 8 Departure

This day left for your next destination. If you have safari, then might be used to begin your safari or fly to Zanzibar or fly back home. Our vehicle will be ready to take you to the airport at your time.
